The Bane of the Ever-Young
Every child in the empire leaves their home on their 16th birthday to undergo the rite of selection. Enormous temples to Vana, the beautiful goddess of Middle-Earth, are found at the center of each province. It is in these temples that every child is ordained by the priests of Vana. Most children are ordained as farmers, miners, hunters, fishers, store clerks, maids, butlers, builders, or some other profession and are sent to begin their new life of servitude far from their home, never to see their family again. But one child in a hundred is found to be a Favored. The Favored become nobility, living in absolute opulence on the backs of the Forgotten (everyone who is not a Favored is called Forgotten), these children also never see their families again.
